Coming Clean: Ketchup vs. Mustard

On the weekend I was asked the most absurd question in many a year.

I was offered a deli sandwich and asked if I wanted Ketchup or Mustard on it.

Really?!?

Everyone knows that deli meats go on rye bread with mustard.

Ketchup was meant for burgers, fries, eggs, hotdogs (with sauerkraut), and kraft dinner.

Ketchup does NOT go on deli meat, in the same way that mustard, well, mustard goes on deli, and pretzels.

Right?

  1. I’ll agree with you on your list of “what ketchup goes on”. But as for mustard…I don’t put it on anything! I like mayo or Miracle Whip. Ok…maybe honey mustard on a sandwich. But plain yellow mustard?? …no way!

  2. I was present at that Mustard-Ketchup fiasco. I am sorry “Urban” you might be correct about mustard with Corned Beef, Pastrami and possibly Tongue….. BUT with nice rare Roast Beef, everybody knows that Ketchup is the correct garnish. With reference to Hot Dogs… we all know that deli mustard it the correct condiment. So in answer to your post… you are incorrect…..
